Impressive pair of stone Kingsale Hounds on plinths.

These Great Danes are in the style of the favourite hunting dogs of the 26th Lord Kingsale, John de Courcy b.1717. John is described as being addicted to hunting and the pleasures of the chase and lived at Old Head Castle at Kingsale, County Cork.
Here he kept a pack of hounds for the hunting of deer and the few remaining wolves in Ireland and imported a pair of specially bred pedigree hunting dogs to help him deal with the wolves. It is said that these dogs took part in the killing of the last wolf in Ireland in the 1760s
